Late start for me this morning(17th)fire 2. Well 7.10am instead of 6.45. I was woken from a very deep sleep by one of the children knocking on my door.
I wouldn’t have thought much of it, if I had had a particularly hard day yesterday, but that wasn’t the case.
Being an everyday early riser my first morning thoughts were ,’why didnt I wake normally’ and ‘why does my head feel so thick’. A little sniff of the morning air gave me my answer. The air was thick with the acrid smell of something nasty being burned, plastic or maybe rubber, old tyres. I must remember to close my windows tonight.
It is a real issue and regular problem in some of the rural areas, such as the one we are in, where rubbish collection has not been established and the cost of getting rid of the nastier rubbish often leads people to resorting to burning.
On the flip side a benefit of a lack of refuse collection means that many people save their bottles and cans for the recyclers, who do collect, and pay a little for what they take.
If and when rubbish collection is established we can only hope that this does not lead to everything going into one bag and off to landfill.
Hopefully with the recycling culture well established this would not be the case.
At present we have 3 ‘bins’, one for plastic , one for metal and one for glass. The recyclers don’t pay much but 2 months worth got us 65 baht which went straight into the holiday fund…every baht counts:)

A very productive day today(monday 14th). With Wasana looking after the kids I set to work on computer and printer finalising the first selection of greetings cards that will appear in our online shop soon.
shop2In between doing that and trying to ignore the sound of tree cutting in the house behind us I also came up with what I hope may be a popular idea.
I intend to start the ‘Because You Care’ Club. For just 10 pounds a year you will be able to join the Because You Care club and select 10 friends or family to whom we will send Birthday Cards, selected from our Because You Care range,on your behalf.Look out for full details which will appear soon in the shop.
Whilst I was hard at work in my office, Boon was equally hard at work fixing a plumbing problem. We had had a leaking pipe upstairs which created a hole in the downstairs ceiling. On inspection it appeared that the leak was inside the wall between two tiled bathrooms.
Rather than have to bang holes in the walls and retile Boon has opted to stop the present water pipe and fix new ones to the system which will be on the outside of the walls.
He’s not quite finished but has got most of the job done already.
In the end the noise of the chainsaws in the background and several hours looking at a computer screen saw me taking a rare siesta.

webIt has always saddened me that whilst as children we are told that to lie is bad and deceit is dispicable,we grow up to discover that much of society is built and run on lies and deceit.
As the inquiry into the Iraq war goes on I read that Tony Blair says that ‘even without evidence of weapons of mass destruction it would have been right to remove Saddam Hussein’.
Hmm last I heard was that no weapons were ever found, no weapons no evidence.
He went on that if the evidence of weapons of mass destruction had not been there then they would have had to use a different argument.
In other words , as many suspected, their minds were made up and any argument would have suited.
How can parents or others involved with the raising of children ever hope to instill proper values in the coming generations when clear evidence that those who proport to have the publics best interest at heart lie and deceive on a daily basis is all around.
In the age of the internet and with youngsters often more attuned to web technology than their elders the best of guardians advice and direction is being constantly undermined those in power.
I for one am not arguing that Saddam Hussein should not have been removed. But I would have been far more supportive of the action if it had been done with honesty. Far better that they had said ‘ he’s a tyrant, he commits genocide, he has to go’. Maybe that doesn’t sit with United Nations protocol or the Geneva convention or whatever rules they are meant to follow but as it seems that they used deceit to ride roughshod over all that any way I can’t see that that matters.

DSCF5144 (Custom)Just a novelty I’ve been wanting to mention for a while now.Petrol vending machines, which have been appearing more and more over the past year. For some reason I have the feeling that they are something unlikely to appear in the UK….please correct me if they have. Its certainly a good idea, especially out in the more rural areas where you can go for miles without seeing a petrol station, although I can’t help being a little dubious about the safety aspect. Certainly wouldn’t want one sitting outside my house.

10th Nov

Sometimes it just needs a little prompt of a helpful friend and solutions to your problems are found. having no home phone line, I have been wrestling with the problem of how to keep my website properly updated on a daily basis.
allyToday,( thursday-10th dec), I went for lunch with my friend Ally and then onto a wireless cafe where Ally kindly gave me first instructions on how to operate the on line shop that she has set up for my Foundation website.
During our discussions she also came up with the perfect solution for my updating.
And as in most cases it is such a simple solution that I kick myself for not thinking of it.
Using word pad, I will from now on attempt to get back to daily blog entries. It will mean that the blog will tend to be back-dated; the plan being to do them live at home, save and then copy , paste and add photos on the occasions when I get into the internet shop. Happy days:)
draw (Custom)The children at Stratton House have been home all day as schools are closed for the next 4 days; not sure why except that today is apparently Democracy Day. They have been kept busy with yet more art classes from Boon.
They have been as excited as me about the online shop and keen to do their bit to produce products for the shop that will hopefully raise funds for The Stratton ABC Foundation to fulfil its mission.

It is a little frustrating for me that not having a landline connection here at Stratton House means that I have been unable to give this site my desired attention. There is much to do running The Stratton ABC Foundation and whereas I would have the time at home, finding time to get out to the local internet shop during its opening hours is quite a task.

So this is just a basic update on my blog to say that life is busy but good. The family atmosphere we have established here at Stratton House makes it a very pleasant place to live.

It means lots of early mornings for me but thats no problem as I tend to be a naturally early riser. of course I could do without the extra early ones I’ve had lately; such as when i was woken at 5am by the dogs barking incessantly outside.

DSCF4663Eventually I went to investigate and discovered that they had chased a young cat up one of our trees. Even after shutting the dogs away in the kitchen the frightened cat refused to move from its precarious perch.

It took nearly 2 hours to extract the cat from the tree and the final method, after managing to coax it to a lower branch, was to shove a broom at its backside forcing it to leap from the tree.

Thankfully the early disturbance did not affect my ride out with Ally later that day.

Life is so busy at the moment and I’m loving it. During our time running the Brick Road Cafe I managed to pile on the pounds with the all to easy access to chips, cheese and burgers. Now those pounds are falling away as I cut out the cholesterol and fill my days with alot of physical work preparing Stratton House Childrens Home.

newgravelMy present daily routine includes getting up at around 7am and setting to work spreading the ground leveling mix we have piled up. I try to do a couple of hours by which time the sun has come up and it usually to hot to carry on with that.

Then its breakfast in the village and, if I need to, into the internet shop to check email and update websites.

fencegrowGenerally much of the rest of the morning and afternoon is used up organising any jobs still to do or relaxing out of the heat. Then as the evening cools the atmosphere once more its back to a couple more of the physical jobs; at the moment thats the ground leveling, painting the kitchen walls and banging in the fenceposts around the playground.

Most of the big stuff is done now but if anyone is reading this and is in the area and fancies helping ,you’d be more than welcome.

Just a quick note to say that we are all moved into Stratton House and that things are very nearly ready for opening the Childrens Home. One hiccup we have had is that all the phone numbers for this village are taken and we are on a waiting list before we can get phone or internet connection. I will be doing my best to get into the internet shop to update this site and the Stratton Foundation site very soon.
