Oh, I (MikeHyman) should add that Lake Kwan Phayao has an old temple rising from the bottom mud to above the surface. No one knows why. Of unknown origin, it is being studied and preserved by the Thai govt. but you can reach it by a magical 10 min. longboat ride from Phayao. You can walk on a bamboo platform on the lake from the longboat to observe it. And sunset is priceless.

Our Thai friend (Anan) from Chaing Rai area took us to this extraordinary forest monastery, Wat Analyo, and to the lake below, Kwan Phayao, with Wat Si Khom Kham on its shores, and to the town Phayao. We did not see other farang (foreigners) all day! The only time this happened in our 6 wks. in Thailand. The whole area is quite beautiful yet "ordinary" in the Thai way. The tranquil, uplifted feeling at Wat Analyo left us (both Buddhists) speechless. This area, in Phayao Province between Chiang Rai and Chaing Mai, is not in Lonely Planet! Go there.
