coffeeHad another free day on Friday and used it to get a few things done. Going in to Chiang Mai around midday we first stopped for coffee at a relatively new coffee shop on the bottom moat road on the edge of the Old City.

Shame its not in a more pleasant position; the road was fairly busy while we were there; as the coffee was excellent. I was especially impressed with the coffee/chocolate ratio in my iced Mocha. Too often the coffee is drowned by too much chocolate but this one was spot on, and only 45 baht for a healthy sized serving.

After that we popped down to the Bangkok Bank, by Chiang Mai gate. I had opened an account for our Foundation with the Siam Bank, but discovered that I was unable to link it with PayPal so had to open a new one with the Bangkok Bank.
Banks are not usually institutions that I’d rave about but I would say that if you are looking for a Bank with good, friendly service, you might like to try the Chiang Mai gate branch of Bangkok Bank. And it transpired that right now, if you open a new account you get 1 years free personal accident insurance, bargain!
boondkFrom there we paid a visit to DK books, on Moonmuang road. Boon was after more reading material and I decided to join him when I discovered the secondhand, English language, paperback sale upstairs.

A whole wall of a wide variety of titles, most priced at 99 baht.

Boon insisted on wearing his face mask, hit by local paranoia over swine flu.
The unpredictable rainy season weather hit whilst we were inside. There had been no sign of rain beforehand but during the hour we spent in the bookstore, a deluge hit Chiang Mai. Thankfully it had finished when we came out to find the huge puddles in the car park.
boonchiangmaicoffeeMore coffee at Chiang Mai Coffee in DK car park, and then it was into the Old City so that Boon could have lunch by Wat Phra Singh. Not hungry myself I killed time in the Temple grounds.
There was alot of noise going on behind the Temple and I have since learned that there were major red shirt protests going on that day. Luckily we missed it all.
We then paid a visit to the print shop in Prapaklao rd where I ordered business cards for the Foundation and inquired about the cost of T-shirt printing.
That done it was off to Airport Plaza for a session at the gym. I’m quite happy with my progress. Keen on the idea that the walking will be the best way for me to shed the tyre around my waist, I’m stepping it up every time. Previously I had done 3km in 40 minutes. This time it was 4km in 42 minutes and then 20 mins on various weight machines. Still got a sizeable belly but the overhang is definitely receding from my sides.
It was then home for a relaxing night in.
Saturday was out on the road with Ally for me.
This morning I slept late and woke up with a hefty headache and wasn’t sure that I was up to doing much at all today. But in the end we headed in to Chiang Mai again.

kowsoiboonOn the way we stopped for Lunch at the Chiang Mai Kow Soi cafe on the highway from Saraphi to Hang Dong road.
The Kow Soi is great but now I’m rapidly developing an addiction to their pork Spring Rolls too.

Even nicer when dunked in the Kow Soi Sauce….aloi mak!!

strangefruitThis time I made sure I got good photos of the strange fruit out front of the cafe…..can anyone identify them?
From there we went into Airport Plaza again and this time I did 5km in 50 minutes. Not so long on the machines this time.

Boon spent the time reading down at Mags Coffee, on the floor below.

breakdanceOutside the Gym there appeared to be some sort of break dance class going on, with many local youngsters practicing their skills.
On the way home we visited 2 markets. First was on the highway from Hang Dong Rd to Saraphi, turn left off Hang dong Rd at the Samoeng Intersection.
This extensive local market is open on Fridays and Sundays. So if you live local or maybe you’re on extensive backpacking travels and need to stock up on cheap t-shirts, try this one out.
We then stopped off at the big sunday Market in Saraphi. held at the local High School. It was about 7pm by then and it was just finishing, but looks like another one that would be well worth the visit if you are after functional goods rather than souvenirs.

Just a couple of days to cover since my ride out with Ally. Sunday was a bit of a lazy day in the end. Not so early to rise, after the exhaustion of Saturday, I had planned to visit the Gym on Sunday afternoon and even got as far as getting to Airport Plaza for around 4pm.
sponsorsoccerWhen we arrived we saw that there had been some sort of event going on over the weekend, sponsored by Sponsor.
We’d obviously missed most of it but there were some dance displays going on.
Having got there all geared up for the Gym, Boons hunger pangs got to me and I decided to eat with him first.

airportplaza We decided to grab something from the food court in the lower level of the Plaza.
We then went for a wander around the Plaza during which my legs began to ache, still coming down from the strains of the day before.
Stopping at Maggs Coffee, on the first floor, we made the mistake of plonking ourselves down on their comfiest sofa, at which point all hope of me going to the gym faded away.
dance4

Finishing my very nice Ice Mocha, I dragged myself up and we went down to watch some of the show on the stage outside.

But even the very energetic and entertaining dance routines could not compete with the tiredness that had set in and we soon headed home for an early night.
Back to school today. Another good one, with the kids being on their best behaviour and very responsive to the lessons taught.
We finished early today due to a mass cleaning session, which all the children had to take part in.
snakeAs they prepared to scrub the school down there was a slight distraction when a baby Cobra was spotted.
Now I sort of assumed that knowledge and respect for such creatures would be one of those things passed down the generations, in a country where they are indigenous.

snake2Sadly it would appear that this is part of the culture that may be slipping. Whilst being a little wary, the kids seemed intent on throwing things at the snake, which was doing its best to slip away, to the point where it got agitated enough to turn and head towards them, hood spread.
One of the teachers had just informed the children that this snake could spit its poison quite along way and thankfully they had stopped throwing things. No longer being attacked the snake relaxed and went on its way.
After our early finish we had call to go into Chiang Mai after getting word of some furniture, that will be useful for our Foundation Project, going for a bargain price.
We needed to go to Lamphun first, for Boon to pick up his latest batch of Herbal Life ‘put on weight’ pills. Boon had informed me that he was getting hungry again and wanted to eat soon.

coffee Expecting the nearby cafes to be open I headed down the old Lamphun/Chiang Mai road to Cafe Lut 89, the small coffee stall just before the intersection with the Super Highway.
Unfortunately for Boon the cafes were closed. After a delicious Iced Latte, we carried on into Chiang Mai. I told Boon to let me know when he wanted me to stop for food. When he gets hungry Somboon tends to get very grumpy. We got all the way into town with no word from Boon, so I headed to Chiang Mai Gate to the food stalls there. He wasn’t impressed by anything on offer so off we went in search of somewhere else. Trouble was he had already gone into full grumpyness melt down and we proceeded to ride around for another half an hour, passing numerous cafes, before he finally settled on Champeuk Gate food stalls. And of course it was all my fault!
All smiles again once he’d eaten we drove into The Brick Road Cafe. Yes, we’re buying our old furniture back off the new owner who is about to completely refurbish. Today was just to get the 3 single beds and 4 wardrobes down the stairs ready for transporting tomorrow.
This replaced my rescheduled plan to go to the Gym. Going up and down the stairs at The Brick Road 8 times was more than enough exercise for the day.

Well, I guess its hardly surprising, but the extended weekend we had due to the Buddhist Celebrations of the Rainy Season, was characterised mostly by …..rain…lots of it. In fact once it started Saturday evening, it didn’t stop until Tuesday.
We actually braved the rain on Monday, putting on our macs and went into Chiang Mai to the Gym. I’m really on this fitness thing now, three weeks and I’m still doing it, shocker!
Stopping on the way for Kow Soi, we then went into Airport Plaza, before going to the gym, I needed to let my food go down properly first. So we used some time to go and check out a different Gym that my friend Jonathan had told me about. Well, a gyms a gym to me but the result of the visit is that I now have lifetime gold+ membership and will change to that gym on Sunday.
Tuesday saw things a lot dryer and we did go out for a short ride out.

boonlunchsankampaengHeading over towards San Kam Paeng on the Banthi road, I should have remembered from Saturdays ride out with Ally, the distinct lack of decent eating stops along this road.
We ended up all the way to the main San Kampaeng-Chiang Mai road, crossing it and riding a couple of kilometres towards San Kam Paeng itself, before we found a lunch stop. I should point out that its partly my fight for not being keen on Noodles, as we had passed a few other cafes but they were all Noodle places.
schoolnear wat patungOn the way back we called up to Wat Pa Tung and I got a photo of one of the possible sites for our Foundation plans.
We also spotted another big house for rent which may be another on the list of choices.
Yesterday was a much nicer day from the beginning and in the morning we rode over to Huay Tung Tao for lunch and a swim.
boonAs apposed to the normal ‘splash about’, I actually did about half an hours serious swimming.
Had a great lunch.

We had to change tables once when Somboon started freaking out at the sight of a hairy caterpillar.

Can’t be sure if it was just his excuse but he assures me they make you itch a lot if you come into contact with them.

caterpillar huaytungtaoOur other lunchtime companions were the cafe cat, who happily ate our leftovers, and a beautiful yellow and black butterfly, possibly a cousin of that hairy caterpillar.
Later in the afternoon we called in at The Brick Road, where Boon, whoes eating like a horse these days, had Spaghetti Bolognese, and I chatted with a nice Dutch family.
moneyboxOn the way home we called in at Chompoo where we fed the fish and I bought a new Moneybox.

You may have read in a previous post, there is a stall that sells these plaster of Paris moneyboxes, along with a selection of paints for you to decorate it yourself.

At 30 baht for the largest, they are a bargain.
toadschompooWe also saw these amazing looking toads.

Quite a wildlife day.

So my evening was mostly taken with some relaxing, simple artwork;

Its been quite a busy past few days, which has included quite a few trips into Chiang Mai.

The first highlight was last thursday evening (18th) when I went in to town to meet Ally for the free meal for two at The Amari Rincome Hotel, my prize from the Care For Dogs Open Day.

Although Boon didnt want to go for the meal, he did come into town with me. We had gone a little early for my planned rendezvous with Ally, so we first went to Central Shopping Plaza. We had been lucky on the ride in from Lamphun but the heavens had opened just as we arrived in Ratchadamnoen Rd to find The Brick Road Cafe closed.

Whilst sheltering from the rain we did a bit of clothes shopping and bought new trousers for teaching in. Previously I had bought too many black trousers, which have a habit of attracting any mosquitos that happen to be around. So this time I got myself a couple of pairs of Chinos, beige and hint of green.Boon got some too as his other trousers had popped the zip, not good at school with a bunch of kids always on the look out for a reason to make fun.

As 7.30 approachedd I left Boon and headed off on the short trip from Central Shopping Plaza, Huay Kaew, up to Nimmanhamein Rd where the very impressive Amari Rincome Hotel sits close to the busy intersection, close to the start of the Superhighway.

dscf2371Not normally a visitor to such high class establishments, I actually felt quite intimidated and had no intention of going in until Ally was there to accompany me. She arrived just a few moments later, enough time for me to have a cigarette, and off we went, up the steps to the Lanna Restaurant, where it would appear that the hold a Buffet every Thursday evening between 6pm and 10pm.

Hopeless reporter that I am I neglected to check the menu for the normal price of the buffet, but I think you’ll have a rough idea when I tell you the price of our drinks, that were not included in my Prize.

It has to be said that on the whole, the buffet was excellent, with a wide range of choice; various Thai curries, Vietmanese spring rolls, pakora, lots of roast meats,( including Duck), salads, and a delicious choice of desserts. And these a just a few of the things that were on offer, the full spread was too much to list even if I could remember it all.

One criticism I would have is that some of the fried items, notably the pakora, were very very greasy and would not have got through my kitchen door, but otherwise it was pretty damn good. Ally and I had a couple of hours taking our fill and putting the worlds to rites, swilling down the delicious food with our Singha soda waters.

So I can tell you, the bill for 2 Singha soda waters, 164 baht, nuff said.

bettermexicanBefore heading home we popped into Black Canyon Coffee down the road where we waited for Boon to arrive and i enjoyed Iced Mexican Coffee in a glass boot.

Friday was a free day for us and in the afternoon we returned to Chiang Mai with a loose plan to visit some of the Childrens Homes around the City area in order to prepare a series of features for this site, highlighting the work of these , sadly, much needed facilities.

As it was, I needed to get new name cards done first, and it turned out that the cards would not be ready until the evening. Another rainy day, we had come into Chiang Mai between downpours, we scratched our heads for something else to do whilst waiting for the cards to be done. After eating at The Brick Road Cafe, we elected to go and check out the movies on show at the Cineplex in Airport Plaza.

airportplazaoutshopsIts been quite sometime since we visited this place and had to search around a bit for the new motorcy parking area.

As we headed into the Plaza we saw that the old area has now got prefab shop units on it.

Airport Plaza is a bigger affair than the one in Huay Kaew Road but , for me has a less homely feel to it, this one feels a bit more ‘exclusive’.

This is reflected by the fact that the Cineplex here charges twice the price of Central Huay Kaew.

cinemaThe cine complex is, undoubtedly, furbished much better, very plush looking, with beautiful carpets and neon signs everywhere;

and generally they have a wider choice of movies; but once inside your selected screening room, as far as I’m concerned, the seating, whilst maybe newer, is not as well laid out and nowhere near as comfortable.

That said, ignoring the price, we very much enjoyed the movie, the latest Disney/Pixar offering, ‘UP’.

boonhtt2Saturday saw us back into Chiang Mai yet again, but this time, after collecting my stuff from the printers, it hadn’t been finished the day before, we took advantage of the nicer weather and rode out for an afternoon at Huay Tung Tao. We enjoyed a couple of hours there, taking in a late lunch and taking a dip in the lake. A nice relaxing day.

In the evening I got word from Jonathan, our most long term regular customer at The Brick Road Cafe, who now works in Dubai, teaching  English to University students. Presently on a research trip to Thailand he had managed to squeeze a couple of days in Chiang Mai into his schedule. So we arranged to meet him at The Brick Road in the evening.

We headed into town at around 2pm, having a few things to do first. One was to find a Gym that I can join in an attempt to halt the recent rapid spread of my waistline. We tried looking around Lamphun first but had no luck.

lut89coffeeTaking the Saraphi route into Chiang Mai we had to make a coffee stop just short of the Superhighway when another downpour hit. This is a good opportunity to mention this pleasant coffee stall, l’ut 89, which does excellent fresh coffee at wonderful Thai prices. So if you are heading out to Lamphun on the old road, I highly recommend stopping here on the way. It is literally 2 or 3 minutes ride from the main intersection underneath the Superhighway, on the right as you head to Lamphun.

Whilst there Boon asked the proprieter about Gyms, and they suggested checking out Tesco Lotus on Hang Dong road. So, once the rain stopped, thats just what we did.

As a result we now have a book of 10 ‘day’ tickets to use the Gym there.

From there we went in to town and to The Baan Kingkaew Orphanage in Wulai Road. There I went to reception and explained what I would like to do asking if we could make an appointment for a convenient time to do the feature. I was very impressed with the set up, even though it was not easy to set anything up. Infact it was the fact that it was not easy that impressed me.

First of all, with the present Swine Flu problem they have restrictions on outsiders visiting. Explaining that I have been resident here for 3 years now, I still had to write out a clear explanation of what I wanted to do and why and was informed that the request would go before a committee who would make a decision and let me know. The reporter in me found this mildly frustrating, but the ‘care worker’ in me was very impressed at the security side of it and the diligence it showed.

From there we headed into the Old City and went to chillout at The Brick Road, watch the Sunday Market and wait for Jonathan.

jonathanHe duely arrived, around 6pm and we had a couple of hours catching up on each others recent lives.

It was really good to see him again, he had become a good friend over and above being a customer.

We have arranged another meet tonight when Jonathan is going interview mee for his research on TEFL courses, should be fun.

Jonathan left to go market shopping just before 8 and we hung out a little while longer whilst Boon, having not been hungry earlier decided to fight his way through a steak and chips.

toomuchforboonBonus for Wispa when we got home.
