Its been quite a busy past few days, which has included quite a few trips into Chiang Mai.
The first highlight was last thursday evening (18th) when I went in to town to meet Ally for the free meal for two at The Amari Rincome Hotel, my prize from the Care For Dogs Open Day.
Although Boon didnt want to go for the meal, he did come into town with me. We had gone a little early for my planned rendezvous with Ally, so we first went to Central Shopping Plaza. We had been lucky on the ride in from Lamphun but the heavens had opened just as we arrived in Ratchadamnoen Rd to find The Brick Road Cafe closed.
Whilst sheltering from the rain we did a bit of clothes shopping and bought new trousers for teaching in. Previously I had bought too many black trousers, which have a habit of attracting any mosquitos that happen to be around. So this time I got myself a couple of pairs of Chinos, beige and hint of green.Boon got some too as his other trousers had popped the zip, not good at school with a bunch of kids always on the look out for a reason to make fun.
As 7.30 approachedd I left Boon and headed off on the short trip from Central Shopping Plaza, Huay Kaew, up to Nimmanhamein Rd where the very impressive Amari Rincome Hotel sits close to the busy intersection, close to the start of the Superhighway.
Not normally a visitor to such high class establishments, I actually felt quite intimidated and had no intention of going in until Ally was there to accompany me. She arrived just a few moments later, enough time for me to have a cigarette, and off we went, up the steps to the Lanna Restaurant, where it would appear that the hold a Buffet every Thursday evening between 6pm and 10pm.
Hopeless reporter that I am I neglected to check the menu for the normal price of the buffet, but I think you’ll have a rough idea when I tell you the price of our drinks, that were not included in my Prize.
It has to be said that on the whole, the buffet was excellent, with a wide range of choice; various Thai curries, Vietmanese spring rolls, pakora, lots of roast meats,( including Duck), salads, and a delicious choice of desserts. And these a just a few of the things that were on offer, the full spread was too much to list even if I could remember it all.
One criticism I would have is that some of the fried items, notably the pakora, were very very greasy and would not have got through my kitchen door, but otherwise it was pretty damn good. Ally and I had a couple of hours taking our fill and putting the worlds to rites, swilling down the delicious food with our Singha soda waters.
So I can tell you, the bill for 2 Singha soda waters, 164 baht, nuff said.
Before heading home we popped into Black Canyon Coffee down the road where we waited for Boon to arrive and i enjoyed Iced Mexican Coffee in a glass boot.
Friday was a free day for us and in the afternoon we returned to Chiang Mai with a loose plan to visit some of the Childrens Homes around the City area in order to prepare a series of features for this site, highlighting the work of these , sadly, much needed facilities.
As it was, I needed to get new name cards done first, and it turned out that the cards would not be ready until the evening. Another rainy day, we had come into Chiang Mai between downpours, we scratched our heads for something else to do whilst waiting for the cards to be done. After eating at The Brick Road Cafe, we elected to go and check out the movies on show at the Cineplex in Airport Plaza.
Its been quite sometime since we visited this place and had to search around a bit for the new motorcy parking area.
As we headed into the Plaza we saw that the old area has now got prefab shop units on it.
Airport Plaza is a bigger affair than the one in Huay Kaew Road but , for me has a less homely feel to it, this one feels a bit more ‘exclusive’.
This is reflected by the fact that the Cineplex here charges twice the price of Central Huay Kaew.
The cine complex is, undoubtedly, furbished much better, very plush looking, with beautiful carpets and neon signs everywhere;
and generally they have a wider choice of movies; but once inside your selected screening room, as far as I’m concerned, the seating, whilst maybe newer, is not as well laid out and nowhere near as comfortable.
That said, ignoring the price, we very much enjoyed the movie, the latest Disney/Pixar offering, ‘UP’.
Saturday saw us back into Chiang Mai yet again, but this time, after collecting my stuff from the printers, it hadn’t been finished the day before, we took advantage of the nicer weather and rode out for an afternoon at Huay Tung Tao. We enjoyed a couple of hours there, taking in a late lunch and taking a dip in the lake. A nice relaxing day.
In the evening I got word from Jonathan, our most long term regular customer at The Brick Road Cafe, who now works in Dubai, teaching English to University students. Presently on a research trip to Thailand he had managed to squeeze a couple of days in Chiang Mai into his schedule. So we arranged to meet him at The Brick Road in the evening.
We headed into town at around 2pm, having a few things to do first. One was to find a Gym that I can join in an attempt to halt the recent rapid spread of my waistline. We tried looking around Lamphun first but had no luck.
Taking the Saraphi route into Chiang Mai we had to make a coffee stop just short of the Superhighway when another downpour hit. This is a good opportunity to mention this pleasant coffee stall, l’ut 89, which does excellent fresh coffee at wonderful Thai prices. So if you are heading out to Lamphun on the old road, I highly recommend stopping here on the way. It is literally 2 or 3 minutes ride from the main intersection underneath the Superhighway, on the right as you head to Lamphun.
Whilst there Boon asked the proprieter about Gyms, and they suggested checking out Tesco Lotus on Hang Dong road. So, once the rain stopped, thats just what we did.
As a result we now have a book of 10 ‘day’ tickets to use the Gym there.
From there we went in to town and to The Baan Kingkaew Orphanage in Wulai Road. There I went to reception and explained what I would like to do asking if we could make an appointment for a convenient time to do the feature. I was very impressed with the set up, even though it was not easy to set anything up. Infact it was the fact that it was not easy that impressed me.
First of all, with the present Swine Flu problem they have restrictions on outsiders visiting. Explaining that I have been resident here for 3 years now, I still had to write out a clear explanation of what I wanted to do and why and was informed that the request would go before a committee who would make a decision and let me know. The reporter in me found this mildly frustrating, but the ‘care worker’ in me was very impressed at the security side of it and the diligence it showed.
From there we headed into the Old City and went to chillout at The Brick Road, watch the Sunday Market and wait for Jonathan.
He duely arrived, around 6pm and we had a couple of hours catching up on each others recent lives.
It was really good to see him again, he had become a good friend over and above being a customer.
We have arranged another meet tonight when Jonathan is going interview mee for his research on TEFL courses, should be fun.
Jonathan left to go market shopping just before 8 and we hung out a little while longer whilst Boon, having not been hungry earlier decided to fight his way through a steak and chips.
Bonus for Wispa when we got home.
