Wow, isn’t is something when you realise just how sick you were when you get better.

Having been off work for 2 weeks, with major headaches, part of me was getting worried, and part of me was feeling like a malingerer. Thing was, headaches aside, I didn’t feel so bad otherwise, or so I thought. Then on Friday, having booked in at a clinic for checks, sods law, I felt like a new man again. In fact I felt so different that it was then clear that I had been sicker than I had believed.

Still, I decided to go ahead with the clinic and am very glad that I did. Blood and urine tests revealed high end cholesterol and low end ‘good’ proteins. The doctor did a good job of warning of the dangers of heart disease if my cholesterol got any higher.

So now the fitness regime is back on with  a vengeance. I got my bicycle fixed and for the last two evenings have done an eleven km circuit from my house, and intend to do that everyday. Also, now I’m back in form, its back to the gym 3 times a week, starting today.

Diet wise I am cutting out the bread, butter and red meats and eating much more fresh fruit and vegetables.

L25So, on to the Festival!

Boon had mentioned a Festival going on in Lamphun and so we decided to take a look last night.

It is the Loganberry Festival, fast on the heals of the Lamyai, its big harvest time.

So if you are looking for a great Street Market, with lots of bargains, loads of local food, and free entertainment, you have until the 16th to get to Lamphun and join in.

L27The Street Market has everything, from furniture and plants, to curtains and candyfloss.

Added bonuses are the performances ,on stage, by local artists, singing, traditional dancing, drums, etc; Fayre attractions, such as balloon popping, merry-go-round, bouncy castle,,etc….great if you have kids.

And for the bigger kids, they have Bumper cars!!!

L34The Festival is taking place on the inner moat road, west of Haripunchai Temple.

So yesterday we took a day off from the teaching and went in to Chiang Mai to collect the furniture from The Brick Road Cafe.

DSCF3237Getting in to town at just after 10am we went for food first, at Brix on the corner of Ratchadamnoen Rd and Moon Muang Rd , at Thapae Gate. The Brick Road Cafe is now closed for at least a month I believe, for complete refurbishment.

We had arranged to meet Dimitri at the cafe at 11 o’clock.

On arriving in Chiang Mai we still weren’t sure how we were going to move the furniture. After a phone call to a pick-up truck and driver rental service, we decided on using a Song Taow.

The pick-up people suggested that we would need at least two, possibly 3 runs and wanted to charge 1000 baht each run.

The driver of the Song Taow offered 400 baht a run and then said he’d be prepared to get it all on one run for 800 baht.

movingIt took a bit of pushing and shoving, with the seats folded away;  one cupboard tied on the back step and 3 matressess strapped to the roof but it went ok and I ended up giving him 1000 as he also did a lot of the loading and unloading.

I skipped out of the unloading, staying behind in Chiang Mai whilst Boon went with the Song Taow. After taking a couple of Ice Coffees at The Writers Club and booking in for a foot massage later on, I then went to Airport Plaza for an hour in the gym.

Boon was back, waiting at The Brick Road when I finished at the Gym and then he went book buying while I went for a long overdue foot massage.

The furniture is now stored at our house waiting to go into the first Foundation House once we rent, hopefully start of September.

Well, I guess its hardly surprising, but the extended weekend we had due to the Buddhist Celebrations of the Rainy Season, was characterised mostly by …..rain…lots of it. In fact once it started Saturday evening, it didn’t stop until Tuesday.
We actually braved the rain on Monday, putting on our macs and went into Chiang Mai to the Gym. I’m really on this fitness thing now, three weeks and I’m still doing it, shocker!
Stopping on the way for Kow Soi, we then went into Airport Plaza, before going to the gym, I needed to let my food go down properly first. So we used some time to go and check out a different Gym that my friend Jonathan had told me about. Well, a gyms a gym to me but the result of the visit is that I now have lifetime gold+ membership and will change to that gym on Sunday.
Tuesday saw things a lot dryer and we did go out for a short ride out.

boonlunchsankampaengHeading over towards San Kam Paeng on the Banthi road, I should have remembered from Saturdays ride out with Ally, the distinct lack of decent eating stops along this road.
We ended up all the way to the main San Kampaeng-Chiang Mai road, crossing it and riding a couple of kilometres towards San Kam Paeng itself, before we found a lunch stop. I should point out that its partly my fight for not being keen on Noodles, as we had passed a few other cafes but they were all Noodle places.
schoolnear wat patungOn the way back we called up to Wat Pa Tung and I got a photo of one of the possible sites for our Foundation plans.
We also spotted another big house for rent which may be another on the list of choices.
Yesterday was a much nicer day from the beginning and in the morning we rode over to Huay Tung Tao for lunch and a swim.
boonAs apposed to the normal ‘splash about’, I actually did about half an hours serious swimming.
Had a great lunch.

We had to change tables once when Somboon started freaking out at the sight of a hairy caterpillar.

Can’t be sure if it was just his excuse but he assures me they make you itch a lot if you come into contact with them.

caterpillar huaytungtaoOur other lunchtime companions were the cafe cat, who happily ate our leftovers, and a beautiful yellow and black butterfly, possibly a cousin of that hairy caterpillar.
Later in the afternoon we called in at The Brick Road, where Boon, whoes eating like a horse these days, had Spaghetti Bolognese, and I chatted with a nice Dutch family.
moneyboxOn the way home we called in at Chompoo where we fed the fish and I bought a new Moneybox.

You may have read in a previous post, there is a stall that sells these plaster of Paris moneyboxes, along with a selection of paints for you to decorate it yourself.

At 30 baht for the largest, they are a bargain.
toadschompooWe also saw these amazing looking toads.

Quite a wildlife day.

So my evening was mostly taken with some relaxing, simple artwork;

lakeHappy to report that my fitness campaign goes on.

Having made 3 visits to the gym, in Chiang Mai,last week I also made sure I did some serious swimming whilst at the Lake in the Mae On hills.

As usual it was a beautiful place to be.

There towards the end of the afternoon and early evening, on a dry but cloudy day, the differing light around the lake and the hills was quite something and really added to the ambience.

I said dry, as it was for us, but not so far from the lake they were not so lucky.

storm1We watched this isolated storm making its way across the hills infront of us.

Then, after a great afternoons teaching yesterday, it was back to the gym again.

Not so much visible evidence of much change, but they do say that it generally takes 3 months before you get major change after not having excercised for some time. Despite this I definately am feeling a change, which is good.

Next plan is to add either swimming or bicycle riding to a daily routine. During our ride from Lamphun, up the River Ping, I now know that there is an extensive pathway along the river, perfect for cycling.

football-3Maybe I might even get to a level where I feel able to join in with the kids playing football. Good target to have.

playtime-3Its been a great couple of days at school, with the kids behaviour having settled well and the whole experience becoming more fun for both them and us.

Doing my best to find the best angle to get the basics engrained, I have recently taken a whole load more photos of items around the school itself, figuring that the everyday things are the best new words to teach early on.

And after going through them all yesterday in the standard, ‘what is this?’ form, today was game playing day to see how much had stuck.

fatteacherLaying the pictures out on the ground and splitting the class into 2 groups, I called out an item, e.g ‘swing’, and one child from each group had to go find the right photo. Its a great game, that gets a little heated at times as the kids are very competitive, and i believe a great aid to learning.

Judging by the number of clues I had give with nearly every item, not an awful lot had stuck from the day before. So each time they got the right photo we held it up and everyone had to repeat, ..”this is a……..”. Very noisey, very boisterous and lots of fun.

happier-kowsoiAfter school Boon and I went into Chiang Mai for our second session at the gym, stopping on the way for high energy ‘Kow Soi’.

Having suffered remarkably little stiffness after the last session I was keen to keep up the momentum of this fitness drive.

Starting with 20 minutes on the treadmill I then worked my round the machines, concentrating more on the stomach this time, but also working on chest and shoulders.

In all we did about an hour and 5 minutes this time, and I made sure I finished with 5 minutes slow pace on the treadmill to allow my heartrate to settle down slowly. That certainly seemed to make the difference, as I felt alot less wobbly when I came out than last time, even after having a fair bit more.

stormThe ride home became a battle with nature as the winds rose and we did our best to avoid a very visible rainstorm ahead of us. At one point we hit the edge of the storm and did a hasty U turn, outrunning the storm for a while and staying dry. But as we rejoined highway 11 it was obvious that the way ahead was being hit by a heavy deluge and that it was heading our way. So we took shelter for a while and escaped the worst of it.

Once the wind dropped and the rainfall got significantly lighter, we donned our rain coats and carried on home.

Another interesting day. Did my recent posts in the morning before getting ready for an afternoons teaching. But, when we got to school it turned out they were having a half day so we came back home.

I did a little more stuff on the internet and filled in an important document I need to send to the UK and then we decided to head into Chiang Mai for our first Gym session.

So i now know it takes about 45 minutes to get to the gym from here. I also know, from the after effects, that whether I like it or not, age and a long stretch without significant exercise, has taken their toll and I really need to make this a regular event. I also need to do it gradually. Trouble is the latent strength is not so much reduced , and neither is my ego, resulting in me trying to do far too much on the exercise machines, on my very first day.

With Boon watching closely, making sure I did it, I first did 15 minutes one of the walking machines, and did manage to raise a tidy sweat. I then went from machine to machine working on the upper body and then legs, for a further 30 minutes.

It turned out to be a good thing that we were on a time limit because we had arranged to meet Jonathan in town at 4.30. This meant that i had to stop after 45 minutes, even though, with the adrenaline now pumping, i wanted to do more.

In the changing room I soon realised that this would not have been wise and that I had stopped at around the right point as my whole body quivered from its exertions and continued to do so for about an hour.

thapae-gate-from-montri-hotelOnce at the Montri Hotel, at the top of Ratchadamnoen Rd, opposite Thapae Gate, we took a table outside, ordered drinks and waited for Jonathan. By 4.45 I decided I should check inside and sure enough spotted Jonathan who had been sitting there for about 20 minutes unaware that we had arrived already.

After eating as well we went inside, at least me and Jonathan did, Boon went off to buy a book. Jonathan wanted to interview me about my experience of TEFL courses and was recording the interview so we needded to be indoors to exclude the traffic noise.

The interview was fun and of course we chatted more as well. Boon returned after a while and we left at about 6.30 and headed home. Jonathan had to go get ready to do his next interview.

He’ll be back off to Dubai in a couple of days, but we will stay in touch and I’m sure he’ll be back to Chiang Mai again in the not too distant future.

chiangmaigateOn the way we first called at Chiang Mai Gate food stalls to get stuff to take home with us.

Coming home first we then went to the Temple in the first village we go through on our way to school.

Earlier we had spotted that they were having a Festival there.

dscf2500We had seen the start of a local ‘rocket competition’,

where they use rockets to power a small trolley trying to see how far it will go along a wire cable stretched between two posts on an upwards incline.

Getting there at 8pm we sadly discovered that most of the activities has finished and people were busy packing everything up.

partyIt had apparently been going on for two days.

Never mind, it won’t be the last one.

Its been quite a busy past few days, which has included quite a few trips into Chiang Mai.

The first highlight was last thursday evening (18th) when I went in to town to meet Ally for the free meal for two at The Amari Rincome Hotel, my prize from the Care For Dogs Open Day.

Although Boon didnt want to go for the meal, he did come into town with me. We had gone a little early for my planned rendezvous with Ally, so we first went to Central Shopping Plaza. We had been lucky on the ride in from Lamphun but the heavens had opened just as we arrived in Ratchadamnoen Rd to find The Brick Road Cafe closed.

Whilst sheltering from the rain we did a bit of clothes shopping and bought new trousers for teaching in. Previously I had bought too many black trousers, which have a habit of attracting any mosquitos that happen to be around. So this time I got myself a couple of pairs of Chinos, beige and hint of green.Boon got some too as his other trousers had popped the zip, not good at school with a bunch of kids always on the look out for a reason to make fun.

As 7.30 approachedd I left Boon and headed off on the short trip from Central Shopping Plaza, Huay Kaew, up to Nimmanhamein Rd where the very impressive Amari Rincome Hotel sits close to the busy intersection, close to the start of the Superhighway.

dscf2371Not normally a visitor to such high class establishments, I actually felt quite intimidated and had no intention of going in until Ally was there to accompany me. She arrived just a few moments later, enough time for me to have a cigarette, and off we went, up the steps to the Lanna Restaurant, where it would appear that the hold a Buffet every Thursday evening between 6pm and 10pm.

Hopeless reporter that I am I neglected to check the menu for the normal price of the buffet, but I think you’ll have a rough idea when I tell you the price of our drinks, that were not included in my Prize.

It has to be said that on the whole, the buffet was excellent, with a wide range of choice; various Thai curries, Vietmanese spring rolls, pakora, lots of roast meats,( including Duck), salads, and a delicious choice of desserts. And these a just a few of the things that were on offer, the full spread was too much to list even if I could remember it all.

One criticism I would have is that some of the fried items, notably the pakora, were very very greasy and would not have got through my kitchen door, but otherwise it was pretty damn good. Ally and I had a couple of hours taking our fill and putting the worlds to rites, swilling down the delicious food with our Singha soda waters.

So I can tell you, the bill for 2 Singha soda waters, 164 baht, nuff said.

bettermexicanBefore heading home we popped into Black Canyon Coffee down the road where we waited for Boon to arrive and i enjoyed Iced Mexican Coffee in a glass boot.

Friday was a free day for us and in the afternoon we returned to Chiang Mai with a loose plan to visit some of the Childrens Homes around the City area in order to prepare a series of features for this site, highlighting the work of these , sadly, much needed facilities.

As it was, I needed to get new name cards done first, and it turned out that the cards would not be ready until the evening. Another rainy day, we had come into Chiang Mai between downpours, we scratched our heads for something else to do whilst waiting for the cards to be done. After eating at The Brick Road Cafe, we elected to go and check out the movies on show at the Cineplex in Airport Plaza.

airportplazaoutshopsIts been quite sometime since we visited this place and had to search around a bit for the new motorcy parking area.

As we headed into the Plaza we saw that the old area has now got prefab shop units on it.

Airport Plaza is a bigger affair than the one in Huay Kaew Road but , for me has a less homely feel to it, this one feels a bit more ‘exclusive’.

This is reflected by the fact that the Cineplex here charges twice the price of Central Huay Kaew.

cinemaThe cine complex is, undoubtedly, furbished much better, very plush looking, with beautiful carpets and neon signs everywhere;

and generally they have a wider choice of movies; but once inside your selected screening room, as far as I’m concerned, the seating, whilst maybe newer, is not as well laid out and nowhere near as comfortable.

That said, ignoring the price, we very much enjoyed the movie, the latest Disney/Pixar offering, ‘UP’.

boonhtt2Saturday saw us back into Chiang Mai yet again, but this time, after collecting my stuff from the printers, it hadn’t been finished the day before, we took advantage of the nicer weather and rode out for an afternoon at Huay Tung Tao. We enjoyed a couple of hours there, taking in a late lunch and taking a dip in the lake. A nice relaxing day.

In the evening I got word from Jonathan, our most long term regular customer at The Brick Road Cafe, who now works in Dubai, teaching  English to University students. Presently on a research trip to Thailand he had managed to squeeze a couple of days in Chiang Mai into his schedule. So we arranged to meet him at The Brick Road in the evening.

We headed into town at around 2pm, having a few things to do first. One was to find a Gym that I can join in an attempt to halt the recent rapid spread of my waistline. We tried looking around Lamphun first but had no luck.

lut89coffeeTaking the Saraphi route into Chiang Mai we had to make a coffee stop just short of the Superhighway when another downpour hit. This is a good opportunity to mention this pleasant coffee stall, l’ut 89, which does excellent fresh coffee at wonderful Thai prices. So if you are heading out to Lamphun on the old road, I highly recommend stopping here on the way. It is literally 2 or 3 minutes ride from the main intersection underneath the Superhighway, on the right as you head to Lamphun.

Whilst there Boon asked the proprieter about Gyms, and they suggested checking out Tesco Lotus on Hang Dong road. So, once the rain stopped, thats just what we did.

As a result we now have a book of 10 ‘day’ tickets to use the Gym there.

From there we went in to town and to The Baan Kingkaew Orphanage in Wulai Road. There I went to reception and explained what I would like to do asking if we could make an appointment for a convenient time to do the feature. I was very impressed with the set up, even though it was not easy to set anything up. Infact it was the fact that it was not easy that impressed me.

First of all, with the present Swine Flu problem they have restrictions on outsiders visiting. Explaining that I have been resident here for 3 years now, I still had to write out a clear explanation of what I wanted to do and why and was informed that the request would go before a committee who would make a decision and let me know. The reporter in me found this mildly frustrating, but the ‘care worker’ in me was very impressed at the security side of it and the diligence it showed.

From there we headed into the Old City and went to chillout at The Brick Road, watch the Sunday Market and wait for Jonathan.

jonathanHe duely arrived, around 6pm and we had a couple of hours catching up on each others recent lives.

It was really good to see him again, he had become a good friend over and above being a customer.

We have arranged another meet tonight when Jonathan is going interview mee for his research on TEFL courses, should be fun.

Jonathan left to go market shopping just before 8 and we hung out a little while longer whilst Boon, having not been hungry earlier decided to fight his way through a steak and chips.

toomuchforboonBonus for Wispa when we got home.
