On our most resent weekend motorbike ride, my friend Ally and myself were lucky enough to come across the local coffee production in the process.

12We were on the back mountain roads going from Doi Saket over to Chae Son National park when we first came across many trays of coffee beans drying in the sun at the roadsides in many of the small villages we passed through.

Then in one of the villages we saw a couple of people blanching and washing more beans for drying.

27One guy was doing it by hand whilst his neighbours opposite had mechanical help.

The locals were very friendly and keen to explain the process. Once the beans are harvested they are blanched and washed and roughened before being laid out in the sun for several days prior to roasting.

31At the house that was using the machine there was also a lovely little coffee shop where we were able to purchase a cup of their fresh coffee, which was just perfect.

I was so impressed that I bought several bags of their fresh ground coffee to take away.

37I found it delightful that rather than one mass producer it seems that there are many small scale coffee farming operations going on throughout these hills.

Well, I guess its hardly surprising, but the extended weekend we had due to the Buddhist Celebrations of the Rainy Season, was characterised mostly by …..rain…lots of it. In fact once it started Saturday evening, it didn’t stop until Tuesday.
We actually braved the rain on Monday, putting on our macs and went into Chiang Mai to the Gym. I’m really on this fitness thing now, three weeks and I’m still doing it, shocker!
Stopping on the way for Kow Soi, we then went into Airport Plaza, before going to the gym, I needed to let my food go down properly first. So we used some time to go and check out a different Gym that my friend Jonathan had told me about. Well, a gyms a gym to me but the result of the visit is that I now have lifetime gold+ membership and will change to that gym on Sunday.
Tuesday saw things a lot dryer and we did go out for a short ride out.

boonlunchsankampaengHeading over towards San Kam Paeng on the Banthi road, I should have remembered from Saturdays ride out with Ally, the distinct lack of decent eating stops along this road.
We ended up all the way to the main San Kampaeng-Chiang Mai road, crossing it and riding a couple of kilometres towards San Kam Paeng itself, before we found a lunch stop. I should point out that its partly my fight for not being keen on Noodles, as we had passed a few other cafes but they were all Noodle places.
schoolnear wat patungOn the way back we called up to Wat Pa Tung and I got a photo of one of the possible sites for our Foundation plans.
We also spotted another big house for rent which may be another on the list of choices.
Yesterday was a much nicer day from the beginning and in the morning we rode over to Huay Tung Tao for lunch and a swim.
boonAs apposed to the normal ‘splash about’, I actually did about half an hours serious swimming.
Had a great lunch.

We had to change tables once when Somboon started freaking out at the sight of a hairy caterpillar.

Can’t be sure if it was just his excuse but he assures me they make you itch a lot if you come into contact with them.

caterpillar huaytungtaoOur other lunchtime companions were the cafe cat, who happily ate our leftovers, and a beautiful yellow and black butterfly, possibly a cousin of that hairy caterpillar.
Later in the afternoon we called in at The Brick Road, where Boon, whoes eating like a horse these days, had Spaghetti Bolognese, and I chatted with a nice Dutch family.
moneyboxOn the way home we called in at Chompoo where we fed the fish and I bought a new Moneybox.

You may have read in a previous post, there is a stall that sells these plaster of Paris moneyboxes, along with a selection of paints for you to decorate it yourself.

At 30 baht for the largest, they are a bargain.
toadschompooWe also saw these amazing looking toads.

Quite a wildlife day.

So my evening was mostly taken with some relaxing, simple artwork;

Monday

Being my last day of freedom before starting my new job we figured we’d have a day out on the bikes.

Up early I rode in to Chiang Mai ahead of Boon to start the day off with a rejuvenating foot massage. Boon was following shortly after to take the new motorcy to the road tax office.

boonbrc1We met up at the Brick Road Cafe for breakfast at 10.30. Dimitri, the new owner, was just about to leave for Kuala Lumphur to secure his visa. The cafe will remain open in his absence. The staff informed me of an unfortunate situation where a neighbouring cafe had dumped a load of rubbish inside the Temple grounds and had managed to include a Brick Road Cafe brochure, consequently the Temple complained to the wrong people. Luckily one of the staff from the offending cafe admitted that it was them and the Temple were made aware.

We then set out on our day out. The rough plan was to head out through San Kampaeng and up into the Hills near Mae On, with every intention of getting lost. For me its the best way to find new and unexpected delights.

First hint of the day; if you are looking for Silverware in Chiang Mai then the main road out of town to San kampaeng would be worth a look , with many Silverware factorys and shops being located up this road.

missingtempleTaking an easy ride into the Hills near Mae On we chose to follow a sign for Wat Pa Teung. On the way I spotted what looked like the entrance to a hilltop Temple, guarded by two impressive ‘troll’ soldiers. Following the road up we discovered that the Temple itself no longer exists. Continuing on the track, back down the other side of the hill we discovered a huge lake where a large resort sat on the banks opposite. A little bit of paradise.

lakesidelivingApparently this lake is a popular fishing spot, with a big competition scheduled for Tuesday.

We then returned to the road to Wat PaTeung.

Further up this road was what appeared to be a brand new Temple under construction.

big-templeThen about five more minutes up and we came to Wat Pa Teung.

Set in a very large compound there are some quite vast contrasts here, with some large , very beautiful and well maintained wooden buildings and a small plain white temple building and others, like the bell tower looking pretty neglected. for more photos please visit our photo album here.

deadend1We spent around half an hour here before continuing up this road to see where it would take us…..the answer being nowhere.

Turning around we then turned left along a different road to the big lake we had visited before and then headed on back further up into the hills.

We ended up on a road that I find amazing for the fact that it is a ‘brick’ block road that goes on and on into the hills and up to more lake/reservoirs.

lake2-2We visited 3 different lakes along the way, all clearly popular fishing spots.

The area is under one of the Kings Development Projects.

We also came across a couple of nursery projects tucked away in the trees as well as quite an extensive fish farm which I intend to return to for a much fuller report.

Having in mind to try and work our way towards the lake that we visited recently, , our best guesses then took us off road for a short period before we hit a proper road again that took us on to Banthi. We gave up on finding the other lake, being mid afternoon by then we were starting to fade under the blistering sun.

footLooking for somewhere to stop for coffee I pulled over briefly only to have Boon pull over to join me and promptly run over my right foot.

Finding a small stall down the road I sat to recover an inspect the damage, fortunately not so bad, much to Somboons amusement.

Then it was a gentle ride home, getting back at around 4.dontlaugh

After some rest and some early evening computer work we popped out for some medicine for my ear infection that has flared up again, and then for food , that we had to eat by candlelite as the electricity had gone off everywhere, and remained off for quite some time. Just as well I wanted an early night.

Having hired a car for 3 days, it was time to take my family out and about to further enjoy the delights of Chiang Mai.

We rented a honda CRV from my good friends at Jaguar Motorbike and Car rentals, Soi 1 Ratchavihti Rd, off Moon Muang Rd. I have rented various vehicles from here over the last 2 and a half years and always been impressed by the service, price and standard of the vehicles.
