With a few days reprieve from actual teaching, until next week, we decided to pay a much overdue visit to out friend Yao, at You Sabai in Mateang.
Leaving here at 10.30am, it was a bit dubious from the start. we had had heavy rain the in the early hours and the sky continued to look greay and ominous. Still, the cool temperature that came with it was a welcome break from the recent blistering heat.
Around 35 minutes ride saw us on the Mae Rim road out of Chiang Mai. Having been quite peckish from the outset I was on the look out for breakfast and spotted a nice looking place just before the first Jiffy petrol station on that road.
It is clearly a popular place judging by the healthy customer numbers.
A very modern Thai bakery outlet , with air-con indoors and a pleasant outdoor section to, if you ignored the muddy empty plot next door and the building works behind.
Being dirty rotten smokers, we sat outside and ordered the 55 baht breakfast.
During breakfast I thought to phone Yao and let her know that we were on our way. Unfortunately, she informed us that they had had heavy rain all night long which meant that the remote roads to her place would be quite difficult to travel and suggested that we postpone our visit until dryer, sunnier times.
Just as we were trying to decide what to do instead, the heavens opened again and we were stuck for over an hour and a half during a torrential downpour.
Luckily our time there was not boring.
Firstly I saw the biggest cock I’ve ever seen in my life.
He must be quite a stud to have that much meat on him and still be wandering around.
Then it was animal rescue time, or at least bird rescue, when what appeared to be a ‘wren’ chick suddenly appeared on Boons bag. Not seeing what it was Boon had scared it away before I could take a photo.
Then, looking around we saw it again, huddled against the rear tyre of one of the vehicles in the car park, getting drenched in the rain. Clearly to young to fly properly we did not hold out much hope for its survival. We spotted its parents desperately flying around it and calling before returning to the nearby tree.
Boon managed to pick the little thing up and first placed it on our table out of the rain. Then after watching the parents closely, we took the chick to the tree and I pulled down a branch for Boon to place the chick on.
As we sat and watched, the parents quickly located it again and, thankfully, did not seem put off by any human scent and after a lot of coaxing, as the rain got lighter, the chick started hopping through the branches , we assume towards the nest.
More wildlife to be seen here are lizards in the trees. I spotted quite a large one, at the height of the rain storm. Its even harder to spot him on the photo than it was in real life but if you look closely, the branch to the right of the red box is not a branch.
With the day seemingly washed out we popped into the Brick Road Cafe to say hello and take some more food. The breakfast had been nice, but not so filling. Although the new menu is still not printed yet, Dimitri has clearly had the chefs working on more french specialties, and I had an excellent fish in pepper sauce. I always new Tiam was a top notch chef and it seems like he is really getting the chance to show it.

Then it was back home in the early afternoon and we got back just in time as the next downpour began.
