lakeHappy to report that my fitness campaign goes on.

Having made 3 visits to the gym, in Chiang Mai,last week I also made sure I did some serious swimming whilst at the Lake in the Mae On hills.

As usual it was a beautiful place to be.

There towards the end of the afternoon and early evening, on a dry but cloudy day, the differing light around the lake and the hills was quite something and really added to the ambience.

I said dry, as it was for us, but not so far from the lake they were not so lucky.

storm1We watched this isolated storm making its way across the hills infront of us.

Then, after a great afternoons teaching yesterday, it was back to the gym again.

Not so much visible evidence of much change, but they do say that it generally takes 3 months before you get major change after not having excercised for some time. Despite this I definately am feeling a change, which is good.

Next plan is to add either swimming or bicycle riding to a daily routine. During our ride from Lamphun, up the River Ping, I now know that there is an extensive pathway along the river, perfect for cycling.

football-3Maybe I might even get to a level where I feel able to join in with the kids playing football. Good target to have.

playtime-3Its been a great couple of days at school, with the kids behaviour having settled well and the whole experience becoming more fun for both them and us.

Doing my best to find the best angle to get the basics engrained, I have recently taken a whole load more photos of items around the school itself, figuring that the everyday things are the best new words to teach early on.

And after going through them all yesterday in the standard, ‘what is this?’ form, today was game playing day to see how much had stuck.

fatteacherLaying the pictures out on the ground and splitting the class into 2 groups, I called out an item, e.g ‘swing’, and one child from each group had to go find the right photo. Its a great game, that gets a little heated at times as the kids are very competitive, and i believe a great aid to learning.

Judging by the number of clues I had give with nearly every item, not an awful lot had stuck from the day before. So each time they got the right photo we held it up and everyone had to repeat, ..”this is a……..”. Very noisey, very boisterous and lots of fun.

happier-kowsoiAfter school Boon and I went into Chiang Mai for our second session at the gym, stopping on the way for high energy ‘Kow Soi’.

Having suffered remarkably little stiffness after the last session I was keen to keep up the momentum of this fitness drive.

Starting with 20 minutes on the treadmill I then worked my round the machines, concentrating more on the stomach this time, but also working on chest and shoulders.

In all we did about an hour and 5 minutes this time, and I made sure I finished with 5 minutes slow pace on the treadmill to allow my heartrate to settle down slowly. That certainly seemed to make the difference, as I felt alot less wobbly when I came out than last time, even after having a fair bit more.

stormThe ride home became a battle with nature as the winds rose and we did our best to avoid a very visible rainstorm ahead of us. At one point we hit the edge of the storm and did a hasty U turn, outrunning the storm for a while and staying dry. But as we rejoined highway 11 it was obvious that the way ahead was being hit by a heavy deluge and that it was heading our way. So we took shelter for a while and escaped the worst of it.

Once the wind dropped and the rainfall got significantly lighter, we donned our rain coats and carried on home.

With a few days reprieve from actual teaching, until next week, we decided to pay a much overdue visit to out friend Yao, at You Sabai in Mateang.

Leaving here at 10.30am, it was a bit dubious from the start. we had had heavy rain the in the early hours and the sky continued to look greay and ominous. Still, the cool temperature that came with it was a welcome break from the recent blistering heat.

coffeemaerimrd Around 35 minutes ride saw us on the Mae Rim road out of Chiang Mai. Having been quite peckish from the outset I was on the look out for breakfast and spotted a nice looking place just before the first Jiffy petrol station on that road.

It is clearly a popular place judging by the healthy customer numbers.

booncoffeeA very modern Thai bakery outlet , with air-con indoors and a pleasant outdoor section to, if you ignored the muddy empty plot next door and the building works behind.

Being dirty rotten smokers, we sat outside and ordered the 55 baht breakfast.

During breakfast I thought to phone Yao and let her know that we were on our way. Unfortunately, she informed us that they had had heavy rain all night long which meant that the remote roads to her place would be quite difficult to travel and suggested that we postpone our visit until dryer, sunnier times.

breakfastJust as we were trying to decide what to do instead, the heavens opened again and we were stuck for over an hour and a half during a torrential downpour.

bigcockLuckily our time there was not boring.

Firstly I saw the biggest cock I’ve ever seen in my life.

He must be quite a stud to have that much meat on him and still be wandering around.

Then it was animal rescue time, or at least bird rescue, when what appeared to be a ‘wren’ chick suddenly appeared on Boons bag. Not seeing what it was Boon had scared it away before I could take a photo.

chickThen, looking around we saw it again, huddled against the rear tyre of one of the vehicles in the car park, getting drenched in the rain. Clearly to young to fly properly we did not hold out much hope for its survival. We spotted its parents desperately flying around it and calling before returning to the nearby tree.

chicktablebestBoon managed to pick the little thing up and first placed it on our table out of the rain. Then after watching the parents closely, we took the chick to the tree and I pulled down a branch for Boon to place the chick on.

As we sat and watched, the parents quickly located it again and, thankfully, did not seem put off by any human scent and after a lot of coaxing, as the rain got lighter, the chick started hopping through the branches , we assume towards the nest.

rainlizardMore wildlife to be seen here are lizards in the trees. I spotted quite a large one, at the height of the rain storm. Its even harder to spot him on the photo than it was in real life but if you look closely, the branch to the right of the red box is not a branch.

With the day seemingly washed out we popped into the Brick Road Cafe to say hello and take some more food. The breakfast had been nice, but not so filling. Although the new menu is still not printed yet, Dimitri has clearly had the chefs working on more french specialties, and I had an excellent fish in pepper sauce. I always new Tiam was a top notch chef and it seems like he is really getting the chance to show it.

Then it was back home in the early afternoon and we got back just in time as the next downpour began.

So with the cool season comes the High Season for the tourist business in Chiang Mai. Our rooms are filling up fast. So if you are looking for a budget room that is spacious, airy and with a decent view think about giving us a call , or dropping us an email to book ahead.

We caught the edge of the tropical storm that’s been over Asia for a couple of days yesterday. Happy to report that all we got was an hours or so rain and today is back to bright and breezy.

Coming up later today will be a report on The Insect Museum in the ‘Things to do……’ section.

Another market run finished and I’m off to freshen up for the the day ahead.

We’ll be making sure the rooms are clean for you when you arrive.
