massagewat1 This impressive Wat can be found behind The Princes Royal College which lies on Kaewnarawat rd, the main road out to Arcade Bus Station, Chiang Mai. Just turn left down the soi immediately before the college(coming from the river), and then right and you will see the entrance.
The compound contains extensive accommodation buildings for its Monks and Novices as well as equally extensive school buildings.

massageschool Immediately on your right as you come in is home to a well respected Thai massage training course for local Thais.

There is a large courtyard with many trees offering plenty of shelter from the sun.

The Temple itself is quite large.

paintings2watchetuponInside there are many scenes from Buddhas story adorning the walls in that splendid traditional painting to be seen in so many of Chiang Mais temples.
To the left of the main temple is a large wooden Vihara.
My visit here was short, just dropping of my partner somboon who was trying the massage course.
Should i have reason to return I will be sure to get more photos and hopefully more info.

Sunday

100_6116 Yet another trip into Chiang Mai. This time it was back to the second hand motorcy market to get the registration book for the bike we bought last week.

Boon had got up early and gone off to the massage course at Wat Chetupon. I had a lazy start, chilling out at home, before popping over to the Childrens Home, at around 11am, to return their collection box and to see if Marc was interested in going to the bike market. He needs his own transport and has a pretty limited budget right now.

Marc was well up for it , so, with him aboard the old motorcy, we drove in to meet Boon at the Temple. Boon was nowhere to be seen when we arrived, and when I phoned him up it was clear that we’d had one of our many misunderstandings, when he told me he was waiting at the motorbike market.

paperworkFinally meeting him there, we went to Mee Mee Cafe for ice coffee before going to check out the bikes.

This place is definitely the place to look if you are in the market for your own bike. Held every Sunday, there is always a wide range of motorbikes for sale, from older model motorcys and 2 strokes from around 5000 baht , more recent models from 15-25-30,000, to range of choppers for 35-55,000.

Its easy to find as well; just take the Phrao road off the super highway and it is just after the first main intersection on the left hand side.

There is also a reasonable selection of second hand cars, as well as a general market to browse.

Boon had already picked up the paperwork for our new Honda Wave, bought last week for 20,000 baht.

rogerand-sambillAs we searched around for something in the 5-6000 bracket for Marc, we bumped into a few old faces we had got to know as customers in The Brick Road Cafe; Roger , Sam and Bill.

In the end, after much deliberation Boon and I decided to let Marc buy our old Honda Wave for 6000 baht. We will be selling the JRD and putting the money together to get a second newer Honda Wave.

Still far too early for the Sunday Market in town , we killed time checking out the general Market stalls and taking one more coffee at Mee Mees, before heading into The Old City.

We made a stop on the way, on the Mae Rim road,( just short of the Moat, just before the local Chiang Mai bus station), for Marc to purchase a crash helmet.(299 baht)

brcThen it was in to The Brick Road to say ‘hi’ to the staff , chill with a cold drink and watch the Sunday Walking Street Market set up. We actually hung out for a couple of hours, and I couldn’t resist ordering a plate of those great British Chips, still the best in town. After saying hello to a few of our old market stall friends we headed back home at around 5.30pm as it began to threaten rain.

marcbuysourbikeComing back to the house first, to find the Honda registration book for Marc, we then rode over to the Childrens Home. Marcs only just learning on a motorcy, having had a couple of lessons from Guy at the home, so it was a slow ride over with me and Boon leading the way.

Marc wanted to take us to see what will hopefully be his new home soon, a local thai house next to the school where he will be working. Unfortunately he couldn’t quite remember its location in the dark so we abandoned that and Boon and I came home.

Yesterday we had another go at finding a massage course for Boon, this time in Chiang Mai.
Boon had been told about an apparently well respected course, held at a Temple in Chiang Mai.
With nothing much else planned, I decided to go with him, looking forward to reviving my Temple obsession.
local-cafe We had no mad rush so relaxed here in the morning, taking a late breakfast at the local cafe and heading into Chiang Mai at around midday.

We had fun with finding the Temple thanks to Boons sometimes liberal use of the English language. Following his instructions I was looking for a Temple ‘close to’ the Arcade Bus Station.

The heat and traffic fumes sometimes shortens my patience and, after a cigarette stop, Boon took over the riding and we got there in the end.

‘Close to’ the Bus station it is not! A much more accurate discription of its location is , behind The Prince Royals College, turning left,(coming from Thapae Rd), off Kaewnarawat Rd,(the road to the Bus station), just before the college and then right. Obviously need to do some extra English teaching with Boon, not his fault, more my laziness in proper explanation.

massagewatWat Chetupon is not such a big Temple but has some extensive ‘school’ buildings and its compound contains many trees, facilitating a very relaxing atmosphere.
Whilst Boon went to inquire about the massage course I got busy with my camera.

It turned out that the latest course has already started, this being the second week. If it all checks out Boon will be studying every weekend from now until November, 3 hours on Saturday and the same on Sunday.

Not wanting to go into Chiang Mai, (we are now on our tight budget and we always spend too much in Chiang Mai), we headed back towards home.

street-marketprincescollegeOn the way out we came across the Saturday walking street market that is also located behind The Prince Royals College. We saw all sorts for sale there, from hotdogs, to motorbikes; t-shirts to exhaust pipes.

Definately one for a return visit.

I saw no reason to return directly and we decided to pop into Chompoo, one of the places we discovered on our house hunting expeditions.

watchompooChompoo really is a delightful village, centred around the local Temple and canal.

We had previously heard about the Saturday market there and arrived just as they were setting up.

Buying refreshments and fish food from a shop close to the canal, we sat on the bridge, over which was constructed a temporary cover giving very welcome shade from the afternoon sun.

lThere are many and various trees overhanging the roads in Chompoo and the village square, and it is a lovely place just to sit for a while and forget everything.
The canal is home to a huge number of some of the biggest catfish I’ve ever seen.

Its great fun feeding them and seeing the water turn into a mass of shiny grey bodies, churning the the canal up like a huge washing machine.

fish2chompooIt looked like it would be quite a while before the market really got going and we decided to head home.

Boon had stuff he wanted to get sorted ready for when he is studying. Whilst he went off to Big C for bits and pieces I stayed home and managed to catch my Mum online and had a good hours chat which was nice.

Amongst other things she told me all about her Bakers Cyst. Hope it gets better soon Mum. If you need any information about Bakers cyst please follow this link.
